About Us

Penn Trails LLC, is an active member of the Professional Trail Builders Association (PTBA), North America's largest private sector group of professional trail specialists, contractors, designers and consultants.  Penn Trails is involved in all stages of natural surface trail assessments, planning, design, project managementand construction for a variety of trail types and classes.  Our special expertise is in the area of Universal Access Trails and Shared Use Pathways.  Penn Trails builds expert Teams for each project, bringing together talented  professionals and experienced partners with similar orientations and skills in their own respective areas of expertise including landscape design, GIS, engineering, universal access, sustainable planning and more. 

LARRY KNUTSON

is the founder and owner of Penn Trails L.L.C.  His orientation to sustainable, natural surface trails has been acquired through contracted trail projects experience, professional education and certifiLk-profilephoto.jpgcations including Trail Planning, Design & Management certification as provided by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and U.S. Forest Service.  Knutson also completed the first of it’s kind 2011 certification course in Accessible Trails, for planning & constructing trails to meet the Federal trail accessibility guidelines, taught by Janet Zeller, the U.S. Forest Service, National Accessibility Program Manager.  He teaches a variety of trail planning, design and construction classes for clients including the PA Recreation & Parks Society, Wildlands Conservancy, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and DCNR.  In 2015, he was appointed to serve a second three-year  term on the Pennsylvania DCNR State Trails Advisory Board, and is Chair of the Outreach Committee working with trail advocates and groups around the state. A recipient of the American Hiking Society's 2003 Volunteer of the Year award for his trail work in Pennsylvania, he is also a former Appalachian Trail overseer and Pennsylvania Park Ranger.

AMY LUTSKO

is the Senior Project Manager at Penn Trails.   Amy joined Penn Trails in 2015, having been with the Maryland Park Service as Trail Manager and a Training Officer since 2006. Amy managed Patapsco State Park’s 220 mile urban trail system until 2013. As Amy herself will tell yoAL-profilephoto.pngu, “my passion for trails is endless. I love talking about trails, hiking trails, building trails, designing trails and helping others address their trail issues.” As Trail Manager for Patapsco Valley State Park, she developed a statewide sustainable trail curriculum. She has trained all levels of Maryland Park Service (MPS) staff, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff, Maryland Conservation Corps (MCC), Conservation Job Corps (CJC), multiple city and county staff, volunteers, and stakeholder groups in the diverse landscape of Maryland.

RODNEY VESE, Jr.

Rodney's primary work is as the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst and Mapping Specialist for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MDDNR).  Responsible for the continued design, development, collection, integration and management of a reaRV-1-profile.jpgl time spatial inventory system for state recreational and real property management interests.    Rodney's efforts with Penn Trails involves GIS work related to Penn Trails proprietary, state-of-the-art Trails and Resources Inventory and Assessments process, as well as, our Mobile GPS Technologies and Image Processing.  

 Rodney is also a Ph.D Research Scholar/GIS Analyst at George Mason University, College of Education and Human Development.   His continued research includes collaboration between the National Park Service (NPS) National Mall and Memorial Parks, and George Mason University (GMU) in documenting existing transportation related conditions while informing policy and infrastructure decision makers and planners for long term sustainable tourism practices on and around the National Mall (Washington DC).
