Sarah Walter Joins Penn Trails as Planning & Design Manager

Jun 1, 2019

Penn Trails LLC is pleased to announce that Sarah Walter will join its team as Manager for Planning and Design, starting June 3rd. Sarah will manage planning and design projects including master planning and conceptual design for trails, trailheads, and other recreation and conservation projects.

Sarah is a registered landscape architect in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and is leaving her role with Centre County Planning & Community Development Office, where she has administered the Centre County Agricultural Land Preservation Program and served as Executive Director of the Centre County Farmland Trust for over 6 years. Managing every aspect of conservation easement selection, placement, maintenance, and monitoring, Sarah also successfully engaged municipal, non-profit, state, and federal partners to leverage funding and expand the capacity of the program. In 2014, she initiated Centre County’s Municipal Partnership Program, allowing Centre County to access more State match dollars for agricultural conservation easement purchases. She also completed 4 easements utilizing funding from NRCS, and assisted with a landmark conservation project in Western Centre County resulting in the preservation of over 600 acres in partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy. While with the County, she also assisted with designs for street tree grants, playgrounds, and a rain garden.

In addition to her experience working with a variety of stakeholders and leading conservation easement projects, Sarah brings proficiency in GIS mapping, CAD drafting, graphic design, and illustration to allow Penn Trails to better serve a range of clients.

Sarah is enthusiastic about introducing people to the outdoors to instill passion for conservation and the natural world, “access is the first step – and when people have access to nature, they can know and feel comfortable there. Once they know it, they come to love it, and with that love comes the desire to protect it.”

During her time in school, Sarah worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Iowa Department of Natural Resources, gaining an appreciation for public open space, active resource management, and the importance of maintaining native ecosystems. She also spent a year studying at Lincoln University in New Zealand before graduating and working for a year on a farm and education center in Southern Oregon. Both experiences provided immersion in a unique land stewardship ethic, prompting her to become certified in Permaculture Design.

Through her landscape architecture practice, Sarah enjoys becoming an expert on specific places, “good design responds to the site and emphasizes the essence of that place.”
