PROJECT DETAILS

Penn Trails was selected to prepare a Comprehensive Master Plan for the Kennett Greenway Shared Use Path & Trail System (the Greenway). Completed in October 2019, the goal for the Greenway Master Plan was to outline a planning and implementation vision for an approximately 14-mile shared use path and trail system, offering a broad range of pedestrian and bicycle recreation and transportation options. The Master Plan provided a framework and process for decision-making over the anticipated multi-year planning and implementation period. This includes tying the Greenway into the Township’s active and alternate vehicular transportation network, providing multiple pedestrian and bicycle connections between the Greenway system and the vehicular transportation network, both within the township and the Chester County region.

The master plan explores opportunities to enhance and expand multimodal facilities, for both recreation and transportation purposes within a community. The master plan aims to improve connectivity to local destinations, close gaps in the trail system, increase safety and accessibility for all trail users, support economic development, and enhance the quality of life for area residents. Additional major considerations also include American Disability Act (ADA) accessibility, connectivity to future community development, and connectivity to corporate campuses and businesses. Using trail audit data and analysis of existing trails, the master plan priortizes projects, defining potential new segments and areas in need of rehabilitation on existing segments. By providing clear direction to the community and its elected officials, informed decisions can be made regarding investments in future trail connections while fostering additional opportunities to extend and expand the network.
